Friday, September 28, 2007 Avoiding Food As A Reward

When it comes to food choices parents really need to step up to the plate and not use food as a reward or having eating out become a celebration. Kids get used to eating out, and it becomes a "treat" versus fuel to keep their body healthy. They actually start to crave fast food and become accustomed to the high-fat and high-sodium content. Therefore any at-home meals pale by comparison when it comes to the taste of fast food.

Start by being mindful of what you’re stocking in the pantry and refrigerator. It’s unfortunate that there are so many commercials that entice kids to want the snack foods that are loaded with garbage and exempt of nutrition. It’s our job as parents to be more discerning when it comes to the food we keep in our house. You can say "no" to unhealthy snacks and opt instead for more nutritious choices.
Parents need to be good role models as well, by eating well most of the time and fitting in regular exercise. It doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing proposition - treats are fine once in awhile but if you make it an everyday thing, they will never learn about healthy choices and healthy balance. Simple soup and sandwiches make an easy and healthy alternative to fast food.
